Korean Double Cleansing Guide

The Two-Step Routine That Changed How I Think About Washing My Face

After living in Europe for 10 years, I realized that the biggest difference between Korean and Western skincare wasn’t the fancy serums or the elaborate routines.

It was how we wash our faces.

The Night My Friend Caught Me Double Cleansing

I still laugh when I think about this.

I was living with European friends, and one evening I disappeared into the bathroom to do my usual skincare routine.

A few minutes passed.

Then came the knock on the door.

“Are you okay in there? How much longer are you going to be?”

I cracked the door open — still mid-cleanse, hands covered in foam — and my friend stared at me with wide eyes.

“Wait… are you washing your face again? Didn’t you already do that?”

“Yes,” I said. “This is the second cleanse.”

She looked genuinely confused.

“Like… déjà vu for your face?”

I laughed so hard I nearly dropped my cleanser.

But that moment made me realize something.
What felt completely normal to me — something I’d done since I was a teenager in Korea — was completely foreign to people who hadn’t grown up with it.

And if my friend was confused, so were millions of people around the world who had never heard of double cleansing.

So today, I want to explain it properly.

What Is Double Cleansing?

Double cleansing is a two-step face washing method that originated in Korea.

The idea is simple:

Step 1 — Oil-Based Cleanser

The first step uses an oil-based cleanser
— usually a cleansing oil or cleansing balm
— to dissolve and lift away oil-based impurities.

This includes:

  • Sunscreen
  • Makeup
  • Excess sebum
  • Pollution particles

Oil dissolves oil. So an oil cleanser can break down these substances far more effectively than water alone.

Step 2 — Water-Based Cleanser

The second step uses a gentle foam or gel cleanser to remove any remaining residue — including sweat, dirt, and water-based impurities that the oil cleanser left behind.

Together, these two steps give the skin a genuinely thorough cleanse — without stripping it of its natural moisture.

Why Does Double Cleansing Matter?

Let me tell you what I noticed when I skipped it.

On days when I wore makeup and only single cleansed — usually because I was tired or lazy — I could feel the difference the very next morning.

My skin felt slightly rough.
A little congested.

But the most noticeable difference came the next day when I applied makeup again.

It just wouldn’t sit right.

Foundation looked uneven. Concealer settled into areas it shouldn’t. Everything felt heavier than usual.

Because the canvas wasn’t clean.

One round of cleansing wasn’t enough to fully remove everything that had built up throughout the day. And that leftover layer — invisible but definitely there — was affecting how my skin looked and felt.

That’s when I truly understood why double cleansing exists.

It’s not about being obsessive.

It’s about starting fresh — completely, genuinely fresh — every single night.

The Korean Beauty Product Problem I Had in Europe

Living in Europe, I genuinely missed Korean cleansing products.

Yes, oil cleansers exist in Europe.
But the variety is nothing like Korea.

In Korea, there are hundreds of options — different textures, different skin types, different price points. The entire cleansing category is treated like an art form.

In Europe, I often found myself standing in a pharmacy, staring at a small shelf of three or four options, none of which felt quite right.

So my mom used to send packages from Korea.

And here’s the funny thing — even after paying for international shipping, buying multiple Korean cleansers and sending them in a single package would often cost the same as buying one product locally in Europe.

That’s how affordable Korean skincare is.

And it made me realize just how vast and accessible the Korean beauty market truly is.

Who Should Double Cleanse?

If You Wear Sunscreen Daily

Yes — and you should be wearing sunscreen daily. Modern sunscreens, especially Korean formulas, are designed to bond to the skin for long-lasting protection.
A single water-based cleanse often isn’t enough to fully remove them.

If You Wear Makeup

Absolutely. Makeup sits on top of the skin for hours, mixing with sebum, sweat, and environmental particles throughout the day. An oil cleanser is the most effective first step to remove it properly.

If You Have Oily Skin

Counter-intuitive, but yes. Using an oil cleanser doesn’t make oily skin worse.
In fact, it can help regulate oil production over time by thoroughly removing excess sebum without stripping the skin barrier.

If You Have Sensitive Skin

Start gently. Choose a mild, fragrance-free cleansing balm for the first step, and a gentle, low-pH foam for the second.
Less is more — focus on being thorough, not aggressive.

On No-Makeup, No-Sunscreen Days?

On days when you haven’t worn sunscreen or makeup — like a true rest day at home — a single gentle cleanse in the evening is perfectly fine.

How to Double Cleanse — Step by Step

Morning Routine

In the morning, a single gentle cleanse is enough.

Your skin has only been resting overnight, not accumulating sunscreen or makeup.

Gentle cleanser → toner → moisturizer → sunscreen

Evening Routine — The Double Cleanse

Step 1

Apply a small amount of cleansing oil or balm to dry hands and a dry face.

Massage gently in circular motions for about 60 seconds, focusing on areas with sunscreen or makeup.

Add a little water to emulsify — the product will turn milky white.

Rinse thoroughly.

Step 2

Apply a small amount of foam or gel cleanser to damp skin.

Lather and massage for about 30 seconds.

Rinse with lukewarm water.

Pat dry gently with a clean towel.

That’s it.

It takes about 3 to 4 minutes in total.

Common Double Cleansing Mistakes

Mistake 1: Rushing the First Cleanse

The first cleanse needs time to work. At least 60 seconds of massage gives the oil cleanser time to properly dissolve sunscreen and makeup.

Mistake 2: Using Hot Water

Hot water feels satisfying but it strips the skin barrier. Use lukewarm water for both steps.

Mistake 3: Skipping on Tired Nights

This is the most common one — and the most damaging. The nights when you most want to skip cleansing are often the nights when you need it most. Long day, lots of pollution, sunscreen on since morning. Those are exactly the nights to double cleanse.

Mistake 4: Over-Cleansing

Double cleansing in the morning is unnecessary for most people and can strip the skin. Keep double cleansing to your evening routine.

F A Q

Q1. Does double cleansing dry out the skin?

Not if you choose the right products.

The key is using a gentle, non-stripping oil cleanser for step one, and a low-pH foam for step two.

Over-cleansing or using harsh products can cause dryness — but the double cleansing method itself, done gently, should leave skin feeling clean and balanced, not tight or dry.

Q2. Can I double cleanse every night?

Yes, absolutely. In fact, that’s the whole point.

Double cleansing is a nightly habit, not an occasional deep-clean treatment.

Q3. What if I don’t wear makeup?

If you wear sunscreen — and you should — double cleansing is still recommended in the evening.

Sunscreen residue that isn’t fully removed can contribute to congestion and dullness over time.

Q4. Is double cleansing only for Korean skincare routines?

Not at all.

The method originated in Korean beauty culture, but the logic behind it is universal. Anyone who wears sunscreen or makeup can benefit from it, regardless of where they’re from or what skincare routine they follow.

Q5. How long before I see results?

Many people notice a difference within one to two weeks — cleaner pores, smoother texture, and makeup that applies more evenly.

The long-term benefits — fewer breakouts, more even skin tone, better product absorption — build up over months.

Start Tonight

You don’t need to overhaul your entire skincare routine.

Just add one step to your evening.

Before your usual face wash, spend 60 seconds massaging a cleansing oil onto your dry face.

That’s it.

One extra minute.

And tomorrow morning, notice how your skin feels when you wake up.

Cleaner. Softer. More alive.

Your skin works hard all day to protect you. The least you can do is give it a proper fresh start every night.

Have you tried double cleansing before?
